Raise the Roof Charity Concert

19:30

Details: Alresford Church Hopes To 'Raise The Roof' at June Concert. St John the Baptist Church in Alresford is staging a prestigious concert on 22 June 2014 to raise funds for urgently needed repairs to the tower and roof. Internationally renowned opera singers, Claire Rutter and Stephen Gadd who are appearing at the nearby Grange Park Opera have agreed to perform some songs from light opera, West End shows and Hollywood. When Claire Rutter performed as Norma at Grange Park a few years ago her performance was described as 'roof raising', her voice being 'secure even in the stratospheric top notes' (The Observer). In the past decade she and her husband the baritone Stephen Gadd have sung leading roles at English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Paris and Sidney Opera House. Together as Rutter and Gadd they frequently broadcast on BBC Radio on shows such as Friday Night is Music Night and Classic FM. They will be accompanied by St John's Musical Director and Organist Richard McVeigh who will also conduct a performance by St John's Choir. Claire Jones, who was the official harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales and performed at the Wedding Reception of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011, will also be starring at the concert. She is a successful recording artist and has performed alongside Claire Rutter in the past, and also with Alfie Boe and Julian Lloyd-Webber. Last year the Church hosted a very successful concert at which a wonderful performance was given by thirteen year old Shoshanah Sievers who is currently studying at the Royal College of Music. The organisers are delighted that she has found time to perform again this year. In addition to her solo performances Shoshanah plays in chamber ensembles and directs her own compositions. Generous sponsorship by local businesses will cover the costs of the concert so that all proceeds will go towards the cost of repairs. St John's needs to raise GBP50,000 to cover repairs to the roof and tower. Works have been delayed until early autumn in the hope that the necessary funds can be raised by that time. Donations to New Alresford PCC towards the 'Raise The Roof' campaign should be directed to The Treasurer, St John's Church, Alresford, SO24 9AG. Tickets for the Concert which takes place on 22 June at 7.30pm are GBP20 (including glass of wine or soft drink) and are available from Six West Newsagents and More by Design both of West Street Alresford or online via ticketsouth.co.uk or by calling 023 8071 1818.
